*PLEASE NOTE THAT PECAN TREES SHED THEIR LEAVES IN THE WINTER BUT LOOK SUPER FROM EARLY SPRING TO LATE FALL*
Under this pecan tree in 1866, Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving formed an agreement to drive their cattle North to sell to settlers, military forts and Indian camps. The Goodnight Loving Trail became the primary route to drive cattle from Texas thru New Mexico, thru Colorado and all the way to Wyoming – over 2,000 miles in total!
Along the trail, there were incredibly challenging obstacles including tall mountains, deserts, snakes, bears and at times very limited food. The biggest challenge however came from the Comanche Indians. In fact, the Comanches ended up shooting Loving with an arrow in the leg, and the wound never healed. Ultimately, this led to gangrene and killed Loving on September 25, 1867.
The Pulitzer Prize winning “Lonesome Dove” is based on the stories of how Goodnight and Loving formed their partnership, acquired their cattle, and then fought off drought, sickness and Comanches to deliver the cattle to the mid-west markets when nobody else would even try. Goodnight and Loving will forever occupy a prominent place in both Texas and US History.
