    The Angel Oak

    The Angel Oak

When it comes to famous trees, the Angel Oak is right up there with The Lone Cypress at Pebble Beach, The Treaty Oak in Austin, TX, General Sherman in California and the Survivor Tree in New York City.

Located on Johns Island just outside Charleston, South Carolina, the Angel Oak is recognized as the largest Live Oak east of the Mississippi. Its monstrous dimensions include: 65 feet tall, 28 feet in circumference, and a canopy of over 17,000 sq. ft.   In addition, arborists estimate that it’s over 500 years old.

Being on the eastern coastline, the Angel Oak has survived multiple floods and hurricanes, including Hurricane Hugo in 1989, Hurricane Florence in 2018 and most recently Hurricane Helene.  The strength, resiliency and age of this tree symbolize the fortitude and perseverance of all the people that live along the Eastern coast, who as a team, have rebounded from every natural disaster that history has dealt them.

In fact, All-State Insurance Company ran a television commercial after Hurricane Florence highlighting the Angel Oak and its ability to withstand floods, hurricanes, and even earthquakes.  Here is a link to that commercial:  All-State Commercial

In 2013, the city of Charleston purchased the 17 acres surrounding the Angel Oak – ensuring that it will not be damaged by future development and will be a landmark for centuries to come.
