On May 7, 1849, twelve early settlers from Goliad, Texas (led by Reverend John Freeman
Hillyer) gathered under this live oak and organized the first Baptist Church west of the Guadalupe River.
The original congregation was made up of Hillyer, his wife (Mary), their two children (Ann and Hamilton) along with William and Philania Crow, George Brightman, Pryor and Mary Lee and two of Hillyer’s servants (Jacob
and Eliza). Not only did Hillyer contribute to establishing this church, he also opened Hillyer Female
College in Goliad earlier the same year (1849).
The Baptist Oak is alive and well for all to see at 248 South Chilton Avenue in Goliad, TX.
